MHERST, Mass. - Five Minutemen scored in double-figures as UMass posted a 88-77 win over Saint Louis in Sunday's Leaman Legacy Game at the Mullins Center. Dante Milligan scored a career-high 21, Etienne Brower had 15 points and nine rebounds. Gary Forbes netted 17 and Ricky Harris (coming off the bench for the first time this season) added 14. Chris Lowe had a career-high 13 assists, the most helpers by a UMass player since Carl Smith tied the school record with 15 on Jan. 23, 1986. Lowe, who also had 13 points, tied for fifth all-time in single-game assists at UMass. The Minutemen improved to 16-9 overall and 5-6 in the Atlantic 10.
Saint Louis (14-11, 5-6 A-10) was led by Kevin Lisch, who scored 25. Danny Brown contributed 19. The Billikens never led in the game, as UMass picked up its third wire-to-wire win of the season.
Brown's third 3-pointer of the game kept Saint Louis close, as the Billikens trailed 81-75 with 1:02 left in regulation.
After dishing out assists all day, Lowe hit two 3-pointers late in the game for his first baskets of the day. His second gave UMass a 75-66 lead with 2:30 left in the second.
Twice in a four-minute span Lisch hit a 3-pointer to keep the Billikens within reach. His second came on a 3-pointer with 3:00 left, cutting the lead to 72-66. Lisch's 3-pointer and lay-up brought the Billikens to within six at 65-59 with 7:10 left in the second half.
The Minutemen continued to build the lead with dunks by Brower and Milligan to make it 53-39. Brower's dunk was set up by a pressured steal by Lowe.
Two quick baskets by Forbes and Milligan in the first minute of the second half gave UMass a 45-36 lead.
Lisch's lay-up at the buzzer made the halftime score 41-36 in favor of UMass. Brower led all players with 12 in the first half. The Billikens had a pair with 10 in Lisch and Paul Eckerle.
Danny Brown's 3-pointer in the left corner with 2:15 left in the first half cut the lead to 37-34 capping a 7-0 run.
A Harris steal and fastbreak 3-pointer gave UMass a 37-27 lead with 4:40 left in the first half after Saint Louis had cut the lead to five on several occasions.
In his first-career start Matt Glass hit his first 3-pointer of the game to give the Minutemen their first double-figure lead at 25-15 with 9:34 left in the first half.
UMass opened the game on fire hitting five of its fist six shots to take a 13-5 lead in the first four minutes. That surge included three 3-pointers including a pair by Brower.
Massachusetts State Governor Deval Patrick attended the game along with UMass system President Jack Wilson and UMass Chancellor Thomas Cole.
The Minutemen travel to Rhode Island (20-5, 6-4 A-10) for the 130th all-time meeting with the Rams on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. That game will air nationally on ESPN2.
NOTES
UMass had five players score in double-figures for the first time since Jan. 16, 2008 at Dayton.
The A-10's leading scorer Gary Forbes continued to score in double-figures in every game this season with 17. He has 29 games in a row with 10 or more points.
Etienne Brower reached double-figures for the seventh game in a row with 15. He has 18 games in double-figures this season. Brower reached 12 points in the game's first 9:06 on his third trey of the game.
Dante Milligan scored a career-high 21. It was his first-career game with 20 or more points. He had his ninth game in double-figures this season. He had just four games with 10 or more coming into his senior season.
Coming off the bench for the first time, Ricky Harris returned to the double-figure scoring mark with 14. He has 10 or more in 22 of 25 games this season.
Chris Lowe had 13 assists. It was the second game in a row Lowe had double-figure assists, the first two double-figure assist games of his career. UMass is 12-3 in games when he has five or more assists this year.
Lowe had the most assists in a game since Carl Smith tied the school record with 15 on Jan. 23, 1986 against Duquesne. Lowe had his 400th career assist in the game.
Lowe now stands tied for fifth in assists in a game with 13, done five previous times.
Lowe had his first-career double-double with 13 points. It was his 14th game this year in double-figures and 23rd of his career.
Gary Correia made his first basket, a 3-pointer, in seven games with 12 minutes left in the second half.
Matt Glass made his first-career start for the Minutemen. He replaced Harris in the starting line-up. Harris came off the bench for the first time this season after 24 starts in a row.

I am proud of the guys, how hard they worked, and their energy level. I am proud of how they responded. That kind of game is what we expected out of them. Psychologically, we needed to have this one. It was a long two days and we needed to have a reward. The reason for the madness was because there had to be a difference, and today, there was a difference. I wanted them to play hard. I told them, people better be talking about them playing hard. That was what we wanted to show everyone--how together of a team we can be when we play hard. I am proud of the way we responded.
Ford on Matt Glass
This was his reward. He has been doing what we have asked him to do. He is playing defense. He is rebounding. He plays very hard. It was a reward for him because he has given us great minutes. He has been terrific in practice. He sacrifices his body. He might make a few mistakes, but he plays hard.
Ford on Dante Milligan
Dante did what he is supposed to do. He is 6'9'' and he has a skill level in a position to do what he did. Chris Lowe had 13 assists, and a lot of them in the post to Dante. He played good defense and rebounded well. He did not get into as much foul trouble as usual, and we are proud of him.
Ford on scoring 88 points against Saint Louis
When we score a lot, we usually do pretty good. I was highly concerned about this team. We don't usually play well against teams like this. They clog up the middle and take away our driving angles. Yesterday, all we worked on was spacing. If someone drives here, you better be standing there. I brought them back again last night at 9:00PM, made them get back on the court and we went through offense. I told them this is where you better be standing if this man drives here. They found people tonight. I was excited about that. I never really looked at the score. I looked up at the clock and the end of the game, and I never really looked at the number of points we had. When I saw we had 78, I thought, that is a lot of points against these guys.
Etienne Brower on scouting Saint Louis
I thought it was very helpful that we could study the last game and see where we went wrong. They didn't change their game-plan too much. They do a lot of ball screens and their guys can shoot the three very well. We had to approach the game with a different mindset than last time. Last time, we came out sluggish and flat, while this time we came out on fire. Defensive intensity can change the game a lot, especially the way we play.
Brower on playing roles
I think, statistics-wise, everyone filled their roles on the team. Dante Milligan got a lot done in the post, Chris Lowe dishing out all those assists, and me shooting threes outside. I guess that is what our roles are supposed to be, but at the same time, there are other things we do on the court. I thought a lot of different guys stepped up today, and that is why so many of us had double figures. I thought we shared the ball really well.

We knew Saint Louis was a good team defensively. They always play us very tough. But I felt like an advantage against Husak and their other guys because they are either too big or too slow.
Chris Lowe on assists to different guys
We watched a lot of the scouting reports. We saw how their big men finished in the last game. They picked and rolled a lot, so we worked on that. I told Dante to go to the basket and I would look for him. I got it to him, and he made the shots. Good passes, good shots, easy offense.

He executed very well. He is very good. Obviously, he had 13 assists and two turnovers. The statistics speak for themselves. Those are Stockton-esque statistics.
