MHERST, Mass. - The second year of the Travis Ford era got off to a sensational start as the Minutemen topped Bridgeport, 88-61 in UMass' only exhibition game prior to the start of the regular-season next Saturday, Nov. 11 vs. Dartmouth at 5 p.m. The blend of newcomers and returning seniors were on display Saturday night at the Mullins Center. In his debut wearing a UMass jersey, junior Gary Forbes had a game-high 21 points. Seniors Rashaun Freeman and James Life tallied 19 and 15, respectively. Freshman point guard Tiki Mayben handed out a game-high nine assists.
UMass was able to swat the Purple Knights all night long posting 14 blocked shots led by the A-10 reigning defensive player of the year Stephane Lasme, who had six. The Minutemen also converted 24 Bridgeport turnovers into 21 points on the evening.
After a mini flurry by Bridgeport, UMass continued to pour it on building its lead to 28 points at 73-45 on a 3-point play by Forbes with 7:26 left in the game.
The Minutemen broke open the game early in the second half by virtue of a 19-4 run over the first eight minutes of the half. Freeman had six of the points in the run as UMass led 63-41.
UMass led 44-37 at halftime on the strength of 10 points from Forbes and Freeman. The Minutemen shot a sparkling 56.7 percent in the first half. Life chipped on with nine points all on 3-pointers.
After Bridgeport scored four of the game's first six points, UMass went on a 10-1 run over six minutes to lead 14-5 on a Luke Bonner tip-in with 11:04 left in the first half.
Notes: Stephane Lasme opened the game with a dunk just 14 seconds into the game ... Tiki Mayben dunks home his first points at 16:20 left in the first half ... Gary Forbes nailed 3-pointer for his first UMass points with 14:31 left in first ... Luke Bonner put back in an offensive rebound for his first UMass points with 11:04 left in the first half ... Ricky Harris had a layup with just 38 seconds left in the first half for his first UMass points.
iki Mayben on how it feels to be back playing basketball
I'm happy to be back so my family and friends can see but at the same time I am here for my teammates. I just want to focus on basketball and not get caught up in the moment and then after I will catch up with my family and friends. I am not satisfied right now with where I am at, and I haven't reached the expectations that I had for myself coming out of high school.
Rashaun Freeman on how he feels the team is at, at this point in the season
We feel good with the second half, but we aren't satisfied right now. In order to reach the expectations that we have for the team we need to improve a lot and it starts with practice at 1:00 on Monday.
On the difference of the depth of the team from last year and this year
Through the game today Steph and I came out at the same time and that never happened last year. It feels good to know that this year we can give our all every time we are on the court instead of having to preserve our energy throughout the course of the game.
Travis Ford's opening thoughts
The first half I thought we played hard but I was upset at halftime and I told our guys that I thought that we played hard but we didn't play with the urgency that Bridgeport played with. In the second half I think we put it all together. We have a lot of work to do with the basketball team. Right now we are an average team. We have a lot to improve upon. First we have to strive to be good and then we can strive to be great.
On unselfish play
Over the course of the last couple of weeks we have improved on unselfish play and what I like to call the extra pass, which we made on several occasions tonight. We had a lot of open shots that we missed that could have added to the assist total off of extra passes.
On not being able to play the up-tempo style that he wanted to last year.
I knew last year that it wasn't the right way to play with the team and I would rather be a smart coach than a stubborn coach. Last year I knew that we weren't able to fast break so I didn't want to press the issue but this year we play better when we play fast. But tonight we couldn't fast break when we were getting the ball out of the net every time. We need to improve upon our rebounding to reach our expectation of being not only the best rebounding team in the A10 but the best rebounding team in the country.
MHERST - Exhibition games aren't always accurate predictors of regular-season results. If they were Ronell Blizzard and Kyle Wilson might have been All-Americans at the University of Massachusetts.
But the 3,003 fans who watched the Minutemen dominate Bridgeport 88-61 Saturday night at the Mullins Center got a glimpse of why people are optimistic about the UMass basketball team heading into the 2006-07 season.
The Minutemen open the regular season against Dartmouth at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Mullins Center.
Despite the optimism, UMass coach Travis Ford continued his preseason tendency to be stingy with praise.
'We're an average team right now with a lot of work to do,' Ford said. 'We're going to strive to be good, then strive to be great. But today we're better than we were yesterday. But we still have a lot of work to do ... We have to continue to get better if we're going to win some games.'
The Minutemen led 44-37 at halftime and came out of intermission on a 19-4 run to avoid becoming the latest Division I team caught in a nail-biter with a lower conference foe.
The Minutemen had 17 turnovers, which disappointed Ford, but he was happy with the team's 20 assists on 33 field goals.
'That's really improved in the past couple weeks,' he said. 'We made the unselfish play, the extra pass on several occasions tonight. We missed some open shots which could have made for more assists.'
Boston University transfer Etienne Brower missed the game with a sprained ankle, but four other UMass players made their Mullins Center debuts.
Gary Forbes, the 6-foot-7 Virginia transfer who has sparked the most interest among the Minutemen's five newcomers, led the Minutemen with 21 points, six rebounds and three assists. He scored inside and outside and showcased a midrange bank shot that he said will be a staple of his offense.
'I want to be able to score in all types of ways,' Forbes said. 'I like the bank shot. People say it's a lost art.'
With Chris Lowe sitting out with a suspension, Forbes also served as the backup point guard, a role he was comfortable with.
'It felt good, but I ain't no Tiki Mayben,' said Forbes smiling at the freshman point guard sitting to his left in the press conference. 'I'm a backup until Chris Lowe comes back.'
Mayben, who didn't play or practice last year as an academic nonqualifier, had nine assists in his first game in well over a year and surprised the crowd with a dunk on a break. But his five turnovers left him unsatisfied.
'I feel all right. I had five turnovers so I'm not feeling too good about that,' Mayben said. 'I'm just getting used to the game flow.'
Mayben added that he is excited to be playing again.
'I looked at the little section my family was in with my friends who came up from back home. I got caught in the moment But at the same time I'm out here with my team so I've just got to play ball,' Mayben said. 'After this I'll go see them. I know my mom is probably going to cry 'cause it's been a long time. I'm happy to be back, but I'm nowhere close to satisfied.'
Sophomore 7-footer Luke Bonner had seven points and helped his early crowd favorite status by making a 3-pointer and a sweeping hook shot.
Freshman guard Ricky Harris looked a little nervous and struggled with his shot going, 1-for-7 from the floor.
Rashaun Freeman, who had been questionable with a hip injury, showed no signs of it as he scored 19 points and grabbed four rebounds. James Life added 15 points on five 3-pointers, while Stephane Lasme had 10 points and six blocks.
'We just tried to get our intensity up. We took little strides, but we're not where we need to be,' Freeman said. 'It doesn't get any easier from here ... We're good with the second-half performance, but to reach our expectations we have to improve a lot.'
PRESSING - Ford, who had previously hoped the Minutemen might be ready to become a pressing team regularly, has altered his plans a bit.
'I don't think we're a pressing team as much as I want to press,' Ford said. 'We're going to continue to press periodically, maybe 15 minutes a game, maybe 20 minutes depending on who we're playing. But it's better to be a smart coach than a stubborn coach.'
The Minutemen did trap regularly, especially in the second half.
STARTERS -- Forbes, Mayben, Freeman, Lasme and Life started the game. Ford had said that Saturday's starting lineup wouldn't necessarily be used again against Dartmouth.

here wasn't much on the line, but the Massachusetts men's basketball team got a better feel for its on-the-court chemistry in Saturday night's 88-61 win over Bridgeport in the team's first and final exhibition game of the year.
"We just tried to get our intensity back," senior center Rashaun Freeman said. "We took little strides, but we're not where we need to be. You have to be happy because a win's a win, but it doesn't get any easier from here."
The Minutemen officially open their season against Dartmouth on Saturday night at the Mullins Center.
UMass took over what was only a seven-point lead at halftime by outscoring the Purple Knights 19-4 in the first seven minutes of the second half. Junior Gary Forbes' three-point play with less than eight minutes remaining in the game gave the Maroon and White its largest lead at 73-45.
"We were good with the second-half performance, but we're not satisfied by any means," Freeman said. "To meet our expectations, we have to improve a lot. And it starts Monday at one o'clock. [We need to] get better as a team and work on our weaknesses."
The Minutemen showed signs of their unselfish transition offense in the second half, which is an area that UMass coach Travis Ford has seen his team progress in as of late.
"That's an improvement over the last couple of weeks," Ford said. "The unselfish play and what we like to call the extra pass, we made it on several occasions tonight.
"But again, we did not get out on the break tonight and did not play at the pace we wanted to because we were getting the ball out of the net every time. If you don't rebound, and you don't hold your opponent to a low percentage, you're not going to get out on the break very often."
Bridgeport shot 47 percent from the field in the first half, but was held to a dismal shooting display in the second, going 2-for-16 from the field and 0-for-4 from behind the arc.
UMass senior forward Stephane Lasme got the game off to a quick start when he threw down a dunk just 14 seconds into the game. Bridgeport took a 4-2 lead three minutes in, but a Freeman jumper, a block by Lasme and a dunk by Tiki Mayben gave the Minutemen a lead that was never lost.
"In the first half, I thought we played hard," Ford said. "But I was very upset at halftime because we played hard, but we did not play with the urgency Bridgeport played with. In the second half I thought we combined a little bit of a sense of urgency to our game with some hard work."
The Minutemen had four players in double-digits when all was said and done. Forbes had a game-high 21 points in his first game with UMass, Freeman finished with 19 points, senior James Life scored 15 - 12 of which were three-pointers - and Lasme had 10 points. Lasme also had a game-high six blocks, while UMass had 14 as a team.
Mayben also showed promising signs in the game, scoring four points and tallying a game-high nine assists in his first game with UMass.
Regardless of the outcome, the Minutemen know there is a tough regular season schedule that lies ahead, and the preparation begins now.
"We just have a lot of work to do," Ford said. "[The players] know where we're at as a basketball team. They know what they need to get done. I will say this, they're trying hard to do it.
"A lot of old habits are hard to break, and we're trying to break some. But right now, we just need to put this game behind us and really focus on our next practice to try and get better because we've got a little ways to go with this basketball team."
