MHERST - When the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team takes the Mullins Center court at 7 tonight against Fordham, the Minutemen will finally have captains.
Coach Travis Ford announced that senior Jeff Viggiano and juniors Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme have been named tricaptains.
''They've kind of been our leaders anyway,'' said Ford, who made the selections himself. ''I thought it was important because at this point in the season a lot of times a team is just tired of hearing the coaches. Sometimes a team will respond more to them than they do the coaches.
''These guys have done a pretty good job of leadership, especially since the BC game,'' Ford added. ''Since the BC game I've seen a different attitude. I hope they step up even more.''
While the captains' only tangible role in games is meeting with the officials and the opponents' captains prior to the game, all three players said they would take their leadership role seriously.
''After the Saint Louis game we had a team meeting and he called the three of us to the front and announced it to the team,'' Viggiano said. ''We can be more vocal and say things we wanted to say.''
''I'm a junior now,'' Lasme said. ''I look at myself like I should teach things to the guys that just got onto the team.''
Freeman said his approach to leadership will change.
''I've always led by example. Now I have to be a vocal leader,'' Freeman said. ''The work ethic I have has picked up another notch. If they see me doing certain things, they'll follow behind. It's a big responsibility.''
The Minutemen (7-6, 2-1 Atlantic 10) with new leadership will face a Fordham team that has been surging lately. The Rams have improved to 7-9 after beginning the year 3-8. They whipped Duquesne 90-63 Sunday, making them 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play.
Jermaine Anderson leads the Rams at 16.1 points per game aided by a gaudy 51.1 shooting percentage from behind the 3-point arc, which leads the A-10.
The Rams as a team shoot a league-best 40.3 percent from long range.
Sophomore Bryant Dunston has followed up his rookie of the year effort with another strong season, averaging 15.4 points and 6.7 rebounds. He's second in the conference behind Lasme with 38 blocked shots.
Most of the Rams' recent success has come at Rose Hill Gymnasium, which UMass will not visit this season. Fordham is 2-8 outside of the Bronx.
''They're coming in with a lot of confidence after winning four of their last five,'' Ford said. ''This is a team that can hurt you inside and outside. They're a very good basketball team.''
VIDEO COMING - The Minutemen players were each filmed for video head shots that will be used on new video boards which will be installed at the Mullins Center by the end of the month. They are expected to debut at the Feb. 3 ice hockey game against Boston College and the Feb. 4 men's basketball game against Rhode Island.

MHERST, Mass. - UMass used a 14-4 run to start the second half and hit 75 percent of its second half three-pointers to run past Fordham 74-61 on Wednesday night in the Mullins Center. Three Minutemen tallied double-figures for UMass led by junior Rashaun Freeman (Schenectady, N.Y.) who had a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. UMass improves to 8-6 overall, 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 with its 10th straight home win dating back to last season. Fordham falls to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the A-10.
Senior Jeff Viggiano (Suffield, Conn.) scored 15 points including a three-pointer 14 seconds into the second half to start the UMass run. He combined with freshman Chris Lowe (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), who drew his first career start, to score 12-of-the 14 points in the run.
Lowe finished the night with a career-high 14 points in first collegiate start. He also had 7 assists to just two turnovers. As a team, the Minutemen finished the game with just 13 turnovers.
In the first half, UMass struggled shooting the deep ball going 0-for-5 from behind the arc. The second half was a different story, however, as the Minutemen hit 3-for-4 from downtown. A trey by junior James Life (Fort Myers, Fla.) with 5:06 remaining in the game capped a 14-5 run that gave UMass a 58-45 lead - its largest of the game - until the final dunk by Life to end the game.
Depth was a factor for the Rams as the Fordham bench scored 28 points on the night compared to just seven for UMass.
Fordham's Bryant Dunston led the Rams with 18 points. His lay-up with 8:56 to go in the second half pulled the Rams within four, 46-42, but UMass answered with lay-ups from Freeman and Lasme forcing Fordham to call a time-out just 53 seconds later.
Dunston was the only Fordham player to finish the game with double-figures. Marcus Stout and Jermaine Anderson finished the night with nine and seven points, respectively.
The two teams played a sluggish first half with Fordham taking a 32-26 lead at the intermission. The Rams held the slight edge at the break hitting 3-of-6 three point attempts - including one from Corey McCrae with just 1:04 remaining in the half - while UMass was unable to connect on five attempts.
UMass will host Temple on Saturday, January 18 at 2:00 p.m. The game, which is Youth Day and CYO Day, will be televised live on ESPN.
Mass is now 6-0 at home this season and has won its last 10 games in a row at the Mullins Center.
* Rashaun Freeman posted his sixth double-double of the season and 25th of his career with 21 points and 13 rebounds. It was his 11th game with 10 or more this season in 14 games. In him 71 career games, he has double-figures 57 times. Freeman passed 20 points for the fifth time this year and 17th in his career.
* Freeman moved to 28th in career scoring at UMass with 1,097. He passed Jack Foley (1,081, played 1954-57).
* Chris Lowe drew his first collegiate start at point guard and tallied a career-high 14 points and had a career-high seven assists. His previous scoring best was 10 points vs. Siena (12/23). Lowe also had two turnover - the first coming with just 3:11 left in the game.
* Jeff Viggiano scored in double-figures for the second game in a row with 15. It was his seventh game this season with 10 or more and 33rd of his career.
* Stephane Lasme had seven blocks to move to fifth on UMass' all-time blocked shots list with 189, passing Kitwana Rhymer (184 from 1998-2002). The nation's third-leading shot blocker is averaging 4.6 per game. Next on the list is Edwin Green (190 from 1980-84). It was the fifth time this season Lasme had five or more blocks.
* UMass had just 13 turnovers after tying its season high of 23 at Saint Louis in its last game.
* UMass had 12 blocks in the game, topping its average of 8.3 coming into the game, which was second-best in the nation behind UConn (9.0).
* Rashaun Freeman, playing a headband in the first half for the first time at UMass scored the game's first basket just 36 seconds into the game.
* Jeff Viggiano drew his second charge of the season in the second half on Marcus Stout. Rashaun Freeman also drew a charge with 8:30 left in the game.
* UMass improved to 3-1 in Atlantic 10 play for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
* UMass is now 10-1 all-time against Fordham at the Mullins Center and leads the all-time series 21-10. The Minutemen have won seven straight at home vs. Fordham, last losing in 1999.
MHERST -- When you dine out, you take some risks. This season, the University of Massachusetts has found many a proverbial fly in its soup -- a 2-6 record away from the Mullins Center, including a particularly unappetizing trio of losses that went down to the last possession.
But the home cooking continues to be savory. Last night, UMass ran its home record to 6-0 and extended its Mullins win streak to 10 over two years by feasting on Ram meat -- Fordham variety -- in a 74-61 victory.
Rashaun Freeman, glued to the pine for much of the first half with foul trouble, scored 14 of his game-high 21 points after intermission as the Minutemen (8-6, 3-1 Atlantic 10) roared past a feisty Fordham squad. Freeman also hauled down a season-high 13 rebounds in posting his 25th double-double.
Equally important, though, was the play of freshman point guard Chris Lowe, who continued to rocket up the learning curve with a career-high 14 points and seven assists against just two turnovers.
Lowe played 39 of the game's 40 minutes, and was hounded and pounded for much of the evening.
''They kept switching men on me, trying to wear me down," said Lowe. ''But with our preseason conditioning I've been ready for any battle."
UMass coach Travis Ford said Lowe has had to come of age in a hurry. ''Chris hasn't had a choice," he said. ''When he came here he was a typical freshman. He came in, used to being the man and getting away with things in high school. He had to be humbled a little bit in order to get to the point he is right now."
Lowe's role has been magnified in the last four games since junior Maurice Maxwell was suspended for academic reasons.
''We've put a lot of pressure on him," said Ford. ''Not too many times do you have to ask a point guard to play 40 minutes a game and pretty much carry you. But that's the situation we're in. He's got to do it."
Lowe's performance in the second half helped open up the game. ''He got some penetration that hurt us," acknowledged Fordham coach Dereck Whittenburg, whose team fell to 7-10 (2-2).
Lowe, a lithe lefthander, was probably at his best in simply keeping possessions alive. In one possession, he wiggled free from halfcourt pressure and got the ball to the rim right at the shot-clock buzzer with a baseline hook; the Minutemen corralled the offensive rebound and ultimately scored on a Lawrence Carrier tip.
On another possession, the skinny Lowe was trapped by two defenders just over halfcourt, and skidded face-first to the floor, but still kept his dribble alive, a la Curly Neal of Harlem Globetrotters fame, and knifed his way out of trouble. Ultimately, that led to a Stephane Lasme hoop.
The Minutemen appeared to be in trouble at the half after a largely listless 20 minutes in which they trailed, 32-26. Fordham's burly Bryant Dunston (team-high 18 points) was overpowering Freeman and Lasme inside, sending them both to the bench with two fouls. Viggiano (10 of his 15 points) kept UMass within range, but otherwise its offense was sluggish. The Minutemen had no perimeter presence, going 0 for 5 from 3-point land.
''We came out flat," said Viggiano. ''We weren't winning the battle on the 50-50 balls."
That turned around right away, though, after the break. UMass took the lead on a Lowe 3-point play with 15:31 left and never relinquished it, to the delight of the crowd of 2,703.
MHERST - Plagued by two straight halves of foul trouble, University of Massachusetts junior big man Rashaun Freeman was aching to bust out.
He finally got his chance in the second half Wednesday. Freeman had 14 of his 21 points after intermission and helped the Minutemen (8-6, 3-1 Atlantic 10) erase a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Fordham 74-61 at the Mullins Center.
'After halftime I was so ready to play I was unfocused and I missed a couple layups. Coach Ford got on me about that,' said Freeman, who grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds. 'I know when I go after rebounds, good things happen.'
Good things also happened when Chris Lowe had the ball in his hands, as well. His first collegiate start produced career highs with 14 points and seven assists in 39 minutes. He didn't turn the ball over until late in the second half.
Jeff Viggiano hit a 3-pointer early in the second half after UMass trailed 32-26 at halftime. Fordham clung to a 36-32 edge three minutes into the half.
But after a Lowe basket and a crowd-igniting Viggiano dunk, a block by Stephane Lasme (seven blocked shots) started a break that led to a three-point play for Lowe. He put the Minutemen ahead 39-36, a lead they never relinquished.
'How about Vig's dunk? We needed that,' Ford said. 'It looked like he was going to lay it in, but then he dunked it, kind of cockeyed.'
UMass dominated the second half by shooting 60 percent (18-for-30) while controlling the glass. The lead stretched to 14 points with 14 minutes, 20 seconds left as the Minutemen cruised from there.
'It's very satisfying,' said Viggiano, who scored 15 points. 'The past year or two there's been bad blood between the two teams and cheap shots on the court and issues between the coaches last year. Even though those coaches aren't here, it carries over. It's always good to beat them at home.'
Bryant Dunston led Fordham (7-10, 2-2 A-10) with 18 points.
The Minutemen return to action at 2 p.m. Saturday when they host Temple.
Four days after foul trouble kept Freeman and Lasme off the floor for most of the second half against Saint Louis, it brought them to the bench again in the first half. The game was tied 14-14 when Freeman picked up his second whistle shortly after Lasme got his.
The Rams took advantage of their absence by taking the 32-26 halftime lead. It could have been worse, but Viggiano (eight first-half points) and Lawrence Carrier (four) kept the Minutemen close enough to set up their second-half run.
'This game was satisfying for us, because we could have been down double digits in the first half,' Ford said. 'We weren't scoring, we weren't defending, we weren't getting loose balls in the first half. To go down only six, I was pleased with that. All the things we've been doing well we weren't doing well in the first half, but we turned it around in the second half.'

MHERST - One of Travis Ford's promises when he was hired to coach the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team was to again make the Mullins Center a tough place for a road team to get a win.
While the Minutemen have played a relatively easy home schedule so far, they've yet to have a misstep at the Mullins Center.
Wednesday's 74-61 win over Fordham improved UMass to 6-0 this season at home and extended its winning streak in the building to 10 games.
The 6-0 start is the best for UMass at the Mullins Center since the 1997-98 season when the Minutemen also opened 6-0. Coincidentally, that team's streak ended against Temple.
The Owls (9-6, 3-2 Atlantic 10) will get a chance to snap another Mullins streak at 2 p.m. Saturday. Temple beat Dayton 53-51 Wednesday.
''We're pretty strong at home,'' said Jeff Viggiano, who is averaging 10.3 points per game at the Mullins Center. ''You have to protect your home court. Coaches stress that.''
Nobody prefers home games more than junior guard James Life, who had eight points last night. He's averaging 12.8 points per game at Mullins, and just four on the road.
MAXWELL STILL OUT - Suspended junior guard Maurice Maxwell's status remains unchanged, according to athletic department spokesman Jason Yellin. Maxwell has been suspended for the last four games for not meeting athletic ''department academic standards.'' His return is uncertain.
MILESTONES - Rashaun Freeman leapfrogged Jack Foley into the No. 28 spot on the all-time UMass career scoring list. His 21 points gave Freeman 1,097 for his career. Next up is Mike Williams, who scored 1,122.
It was Freeman's 17th career game with 20 or more points and the fifth this season. He's had at least 10 points in 11 of 14 games this season. Freeman added 13 rebounds for the 25th double-double of his career.
Prior to the opening tip, Freeman was presented with the game ball from the Minutemen's Dec. 27 win over St. Peter's during which he scored his 1,000th career point.
Stephane Lasme's seven blocks moved him into the school's top five with 189, passing Kitwana Rhymer (184). He needs just one to catch Edwin Green (190). Lasme is averaging 4.5 blocks per game this season.
DRINKING MILK? - The Minutemen appear to be growing. Sophomore forward Dante Milligan, who started the season listed at 6-foot-8, 200 pounds, is now officially 6-9, 215.
James Life began the year at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds. He's now listed at 6-foot-6, but his weight remains officially unchanged.

MHERST - What was obvious before is now official. The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will go only as far as Chris Lowe can take it.
Coach Travis Ford held off as long as he could. He didn't want to give Lowe anything he hadn't earned and he didn't want to put too much pressure on the freshman point guard.
But with 14 games remaining, Ford had no choice but to give Lowe got his first career start Wednesday night against Fordham.
Lowe isn't the team's best player, but he's become by far the most indispensable. It might not be fair to put that much pressure on a freshman but Ford is out of other options.
Maurice Maxwell is suspended and his return seems uncertain at best. Brandon Thomas gave it his best shot, but he's not a point guard.
Next year Tiki Mayben, and perhaps another recruit will challenge Lowe for playing time and at least share the burden at point guard. But right now the Minutemen will sink or swim with Lowe.
Wednesday night was all swim. Lowe finished with a career-best 14 points to go with seven assists and just two turnovers, none until the second half.
He looked confident driving to the basket as he hit his floater regularly and found open teammates throughout. But most importantly his teammates looked much more comfortable with him on the floor.
'You wouldn't know he's a freshman the way he's been playing,' senior captain Jeff Viggiano said. 'We kind of lack guys who can handle the ball. He handles the press and breaks it by himself.'
He had to break it often. Fordham tried to press and trap Lowe throughout, hoping to force turnovers and eventually wear him down. But Lowe didn't wilt.
With just over eight minutes left in the game, he beat the double team up the court, but slipped as he tried to get the Minutemen into the offense. While his knees hit the floor, he never stopped dribbling and recovered quickly enough to keep the ball away from the Rams' defense and feed Stephane Lasme.
'I was so impressed when he fell down and kept his dribble,' Viggiano said. 'I got caught staring when he did that.'
Ford's lack of patience with everyone else's ballhandling was obvious. He took Lowe out with 13 minutes, 54 seconds left to give the freshman a breather. James Life took the ball up the floor in Lowe's absence and quickly turned it over. Ford didn't hesitate to send Lowe right back in after nine seconds of rest.
'We've put a lot of pressure on him,' Ford said. 'It's not too often you ask a point guard to play 40 minutes a game and pretty much carry you, but that's the situation we're in and he doesn't have a choice.'
Ford admittedly has been rough on Lowe, trying to accelerate his improvement.
'When he came here, he was probably a typical freshman, used to being the man and used to getting away with things in high school,' Ford said. 'He had to be humbled a little bit to get to the point where he is right now. He was probably berated and yelled at worse that he's ever been. You have to be able to handle it physically and mentally. That's what I've been most excited about his progression and accepting coaching.'
Lowe said he's used to being Ford's target.
'Nothing is easy for me at practice. I get yelled at, cursed at, everything,' Lowe said. 'But with Coach Ford teaching me, I think I can go a long way.'
Ford agreed.
'When he plays like that, he's going to leave here as one of the best point guards to ever play here, cause he can do a lot of things on the court,' he said.
Lowe, who looked exhausted afterward, thought he'd sleep well.
'But I'm going to come back, practice hard and get ready for Temple,' he said.
