T. CHARLES, Mo. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team makes its first Atlantic 10 trip to Central Standard Time Saturday for an 8 p.m. meeting with league newcomer Saint Louis in a game that could give the Minutemen a share of first place.
If UMass (7-5, 2-0 A-10) wins and Xavier beats Charlotte, the Minutemen would join the Musketeers in first place, where they haven't been in quite awhile. A George Washington win over St. Joseph's would make it a three-way tie.
UMass will have to wait until 2008 to get its first look in an A-10 game at the Savvis Center. The teams won't play Saturday in the Billikens' normal arena because it is hosting the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Instead the teams will meet in suburban St. Louis at the St. Charles Family Arena, the home of the United Hockey League's Missouri River Otters, which holds about 10,000 for basketball.
The Minutemen arrive on the western side of the Mississippi River on a two-game winning streak, coming off Wednesday's impressive 68-58 win over Saint Joseph's.
But UMass coach Travis Ford reminded his players how poorly they built off last season's upset of Connecticut.
''It's going to be interesting how we respond after a hard-fought game,'' Ford said. ''Saint Louis is a very good basketball team that's played a very tough schedule. We've approached it with our team with (the UConn game) example. You're only as good as your next game. You can't rely on your last game.''
That's a concept Saint Louis is all too familiar with. The Billikens (7-7) have yet to win two straight or lose two straight this season. If that pattern continues, the Minutemen are in trouble because Saint Louis fell 69-64 at George Washington in overtime Wednesday.
Ford said he's not as worried about the Billikens' won-loss pattern as he is about Ian Vouyoukas. The 6-foot-10, 270-pound junior center has been among the league's best big man so far this season, averaging 14.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
''He's very skilled and they really play off him,'' Ford said. ''Not only scoring, but passing. He's a very improved basketball player.''
Freshman guard Tommie Liddell is among the league's leading rookie-of-the year candidates, averaging 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Saint Louis coach Brad Soderberg said he's just scratching the surface.
''Tommie is as gifted player as I expect to see in the A-10. He can do just about anything well,'' Soderberg said. ''He can handle the ball, he can get to the rim. He rebounds, he can defend. He's a great passer. His mid-range jumper is very good. He's a good free-throw shooter. The sky is the limit for Tommie. He has a chance to be one of the best players to come out of here.''
Vouyoukas and Liddell have fueled the Billikens' considerable improvement from last year's 9-21 season in Conference USA.
''They like to keep it in the 60s, but that's because of their defense more than their offense,'' Ford said. ''They're going to play a sagging defense that's not going to get out and pressure a whole lot, but it's more containment and positioning.
''They're not going to make a lot of mistakes. They're just a good all-around team. Brad Soderberg's teams are always in the game. That's just the way they play,'' Ford added. ''It's going to be just a grind-out basketball game. We're going to have to try to repeat the same effort we had defensively against St. Joe's.''

T. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) - Tommie Liddell hit an off-balance jumper with 1.5 seconds left to give Saint Louis University a 50-48 win over Massachusetts Saturday night.
![]() Tommie Liddell goes up for the game-winning shot against Jeff Viggiano. |
Liddell's basket ended a scoring drought that began when Lisch connected on a 3-pointer with 4:30 remaining that gave Saint Louis a 48-44 lead.
Ian Vouyoukas led the Billikens with 18 points, Lisch added 14 and Liddell had seven.
Jeff Viggiano led Massachusetts (7-6, 2-1) with 15 points. Rashaun Freeman, who averaged a team-leading 16.3 points per game, was held to four points before fouling out with 5:26 remaining.
Stephane Lasme scored only three points for the Minutemen but had seven blocked shots. Lasme, who has 59 blocks, entered the game third in the nation at 4.3 per game.
The first half was one of short runs. After Viggiano hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring, Saint Louis scored the next nine points to take a 9-3 lead.
Massachusetts then scored the next nine points, with James Life hitting consecutive 3-point shots from the right wing to fuel the streak.
Saint Louis took the lead back at 15-12 with 9:02 left in the half on back-to-back 3-point shots from Anthony Drejaj and Lisch. The Billikens led by as much as six at 20-14, but Massachusetts chipped away and got a couple of late baskets from Freeman to tie the game at 26-26 at halftime.
eff Viggiano led UMass with 15 points, his 6th game this season in double-figures and first in five games. It was also his 32nd career game with 10 or more points.
* Stephane Lasme, who came into the game averaging 4.3 blocks per game (third in the nation), had seven swats and now has 59 in 13 games this season, an average of 4.5.
* As a team, UMass had eight blocks shots. The Minutemen came into the game averaging 8.3 blocks per game, second in the nation. UMass now has 108 in 13 games.
* Lawrence Carrier had nine points, his second-highest scoring game this season. He had 11 vs. Savannah State.
* Despite scoring just four points, Rashaun Freeman moved to 29th all-time at UMass in scoring and now has 1,076 points, passing Shannon Crooks, who had 1,074. Next on the list of Jack Foley (1,081).
* Freeman's four points were his lowest since four points at Saint Joseph's on Jan. 22, 2005.
* UMass equaled a season-high with 23 tunrovers, which they also had vs. UAB on Nov. 25 in Springfield, Mass.
On Wednesday against George Washington, with the score tied and time running
out, St. Louis University coach Brad Soderberg put the ball in the hands of
freshman point guard Tommie Liddell. Liddell drove to the basket, found himself
without a good scoring chance, and passed the ball off for a 3-point try that
failed.
On Saturday, with the score again tied and time running out, Soderberg again
put the ball in Liddell's hands. This time, Liddell didn't drive but kept the
ball on the outside and got open for a 12-foot jumper that he hit with 1.5
seconds to play that gave SLU a 50-48 win before 9,633 fans at Family Arena.
"Coach put the ball in my hands and wanted me to create," Liddell said, "so
that's basically what I did. Wherever I was on the court, Ian (Vouyoukas) was
going to come screen for me. Luckily, I got to the side, he set a screen and I
hit the shot."
"Tommie didn't get a great shot," Soderberg said. "There's a great player that
made a great play. It wasn't a great designed play. He just made it work."
Still, the game wasn't over until 7-0 backup center Bryce Husak, put in for
just that purpose, blocked the inbound pass by UMass' Stephane Lasme to run out
the clock. "That was a no-brainer," said Soderberg of putting in Husak.
It was a game that SLU (8-7, 2-1 Atlantic 10) had every reason to lose. The
Billikens shot 35.6 percent from the field and went long stretches - really
long stretches - without making a basket. The Billikens committed 19 turnovers
and shot 68.4 percent from the free-throw line. But they did a smothering job
on defense, forcing UMass to commit 23 turnovers, though the Minutemen got
quite a few of them without any help, getting called for traveling 13 times.
"You know what's encouraging," Soderberg said, "is we're 2-1 and have played
some pretty poor basketball so far. I'm not saying it's encouraging that we're
playing poor basketball but that we're still figuring it out somehow. I'm just
going to keep working with these young kids to get better. You can win games
with 35 percent field-goal shooting if you have 10 turnovers instead of 19."
Vouyoukas scored 18 points and had seven rebounds and almost fouled out three
of the Minutemen's big men all by himself. Liddell had hit only 32.7 percent of
his shots in the past five games coming into the UMass game and had hit only
two of seven shots from the field, but that didn't seem to bother him as he hit
the game-winner and finished with seven points.
"The coaches keep telling me to shoot it and not to get down on myself when I
miss a shot," Liddell said. "I'm just shooting the ball with confidence and
they're not falling right now, but I know they're going to start falling."
Anthony Drejaj, who sprained his left ankle against GW and whose return seemed
unlikely on Thursday, played 25 minutes and scored five points. Drejaj said the
pain from the plantar fascia in his right foot is worse than the injured ankle
on his left foot.
UMass (7-6, 2-1) tied the game at 48-48 with 2:42 to play, and thanks to
turnovers, the score was still that way with a minute left. That's when UMass
got the ball after Lasme blocked his seventh shot of the night. With about 35
seconds to play, freshman guard Chris Lowe drove to the basket and had nowhere
to go and threw the ball in the air, where it was caught by Vouyoukas. SLU
didn't call time and Kevin Lisch, who hit two clutch 3-pointers for SLU late in
the second half, dribbled down the clock before giving the ball to Liddell for
his game-winner.
Tommie Liddell's baseline jumper with 1.5 seconds left gave Saint Louis a 50-48 win over the Minutemen Saturday night at St. Charles Family Arena.
With the game tied at 48-48, UMass freshman guard Chris Lowe drove into the lane, but Billiken center Ian Vouyoukas blocked his shot with 32 seconds left.
Saint Louis pushed the ball up the floor and called time-out. Out of the break, Kevin Lisch held the ball until the clock reached seven seconds and fed Liddell who darted for the corner, took two steps toward the net, pulled up and fired.
'He wasn't really looking for his shot the whole game,' senior Jeff Viggiano said. 'I thought it was good defense. He made a tough shot.'
UMass called time-out as soon as the ball went through, but Bryce Husak deflected the inbound pass. Lawrence Carrier grabbed the loose ball and launched it, but his desperation heave hit the shot clock.
'It's disappointing,' said UMass coach Travis Ford, whose team dropped its third game by three points or fewer. 'We put ourselves in position to possibly win the game, but Saint Louis stepped up and made a big shot.'
The Minutemen (7-6, 2-1 Atlantic 10) return to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they host Fordham.
UMass was still in the game at the end despite matching its season-worst 23 turnovers and getting next to nothing from their vaunted inside duo of Rashaun Freeman and Stephane Lasme. Foul trouble tied both to the bench for long stretches in the second half.
With 12 minutes, 27 seconds left in the game, Freeman, Lasme and Dante Milligan all had four fouls, leaving Ford with far-from-ideal lineup options.
'Saint Louis plays so hard and physical on offense. You have to give them credit. They got us in foul trouble,' Ford said. 'It wasn't that we were being lazy. A lot of times you get in foul trouble it's because you're a step slow and you're out of position. I can't say that tonight. We were playing very hard. Being in foul trouble hurt us, but it's a part of the game.'
Viggiano and Carrier kept the Minutemen in the game. Viggiano led the Minutemen with 15 points, and Carrier added nine as they carried the offense with Freeman and Lasme on the bench.
'Lawrence came in and gave us good offense,' Ford said. 'He's got to get better on defense to get more minutes.'
Freeman often has struggled against bigger players and the 6-foot-10, 270-pound Vouyoukas continued the trend on both ends of the floor. Freeman had trouble getting his shot over him on offense and his struggles to control Vouyoukas on defense contributed to his foul trouble.
'It was frustrating,' Freeman said. 'I was in foul trouble and I didn't give the team the boost that I normally give. (Vouyoukas) worked hard. I was in foul trouble and I didn't adapt to it real well.'
Freeman finished with just four points and five rebounds before fouling out with 5:26 left. Lasme blocked seven shots in the game, but played just 12 second-half minutes.
Vouyoukas had game highs in points (18) and rebounds (seven) and blocked three shots to lead Saint Louis (8-7, 2-1 Atlantic 10).
'He's a heckuva basketball player,' Ford said. 'We've got good big men and he totally outplayed our big men tonight.'
Matt Vautour can be reached at [email protected]. For more UMass coverage including a frequently updated UMass sports blog, go to www.dailyhampshiregazette.com/umsports.
I thought we were getting better, Ford said. 'Saint Louis caused a lot of our turnovers. The changed their style of play and really started pressuring the perimeter, which they usually don't do very much. Give them a lot of credit for turning us over.'
Among the biggest concerns is that the guards were the biggest offenders. Chris Lowe and James Life each had five turnovers, while Brandon Thomas had four.
Sitting at the postgame press conference, Ford seemed to be brainstorming the solutions out loud. 'We have to get other guys handling the ball,' he said. 'We're asking (freshman point guard) Chris Lowe to do a lot and he's doing pretty much everything he can do, but he has to get help from other guys.
'We're going to have to do some evaluating in the next couple days to see who that is, whether it's Jeff Viggiano or if Thomas can improve, or...,' Ford paused then laughed. 'We actually don't have a lot of options now that I think about it. So I guess we'll just ride Chris Lowe.'
Viggiano said the turnovers damaged UMass' offensive flow. 'You can't get into a rhythm,' Viggiano said. 'You're taking shots away from your team. Twenty-three turnovers is like 23 missed shots.'
AMONG FRIENDS AND FAMILY - There were a considerable number of UMass fans among the 9,633 who attended. Almost 50 members of Ford's family made the approximately four-hour drive from Kentucky for the game.
Assistant coach Steve Middleton accounted for about 30 more as his wife ReGina is a native of St. Louis.
MILESTONES - Junior big man Rashaun Freeman's four points were a season low, but they gave him 1,076 for his career pushing him past Shannon Crooks (1,074) into the No. 29 spot on UMass' career scoring list. Next up is Jack Foley (1,081).
Freeman's scoring total was his lowest since he also got four points against St. Joseph's Jan. 22, 2005.
Junior big man Stephane Lasme moved within striking distance of cracking the UMass top five in career blocks. Hiss seven gave him 182 in his career, just two shy of No. 5 Kitwana Rhymer.
NEXT UP - UMass returns home for a 7 p.m. Wednesday game with Fordham at the Mullins Center. The Rams are 7-9 (2-1 Atlantic 10) after beating Duquesne 90-63 at home Sunday.
MISCELLANEOUS - Tommie Liddell's game-winning shot helped earn him Atlantic 10 rookie of the week honors. ... UMass fell to 2-6 away from the Mullins Center and 2-5 in televised games. ... The Minutemen are 3-2 against teams with Saint in either their school name or team nickname.
