y the time University of Massachusetts men's basketball coach Steve Lappas finally got a chance to check his voice mail after Thursday's win over No. 7 Connecticut, his inbox was jammed with messages. In addition to hearing from friends and family, Lappas fielded calls from former UMass coach John Calipari and Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli among a host of other well-wishers.
''It was unbelievable. Everybody is feeling good, certainly. We're looking forward to Sunday. It's fun but it's time to get back to earth,'' Lappas said.
After a night of celebrating and seeing themselves on SportsCenter, the Minutemen (3-2) hopped a plane to Miami for a game at 2 p.m. Sunday against the Hurricanes (4-2). UMass hopes to end its six-game road losing streak extending back to last season.
''It would have been great if we had one more day in between. We have to get our bearings quickly,'' Lappas said. ''Hopefully this trip will help us get our focus.''
The teams arrive at this game in similar positions. Both teams have a bad loss, a reasonable loss and a great win so far this season. Very little was expected in the preseason for Miami, which was rebuilding with new coach Frank Haith during the school's first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The low expectations seemed warranted when the Hurricanes lost to South Carolina State and Xavier. But since then, Miami has bounced back by winning three straight, including a 72-65 upset of then-No. 19 Florida.
A big part of the recent success has come from the impressive play of Robert Hite. The 6-foot-2-inch junior guard has been almost unguardable this season, averaging 20 points per game. He's shooting 47.9 percent from three-point range. Hite made seven threes against Florida International on Tuesday.
He has plenty of help on the wings. Point guard Anthony Harris is averaging 14.3 points and 4.4 assists per game. Guillermo Diaz rounds out the three-guard set. Diaz, a high school teammate of Jose Juan Barea of Northeastern, is averaging 14.2 points per game.
''Hite is really good,'' Lappas said. ''He's really good. He made seven threes in that last game. Their three guards are tremendous. They all shoot well and they control the game. They're very quick and they're very athletic.''
Miami's inside players haven't been particularly strong offensively so far, but 6-foot-9-inch Anthony King is averaging 10 rebounds per game.
NOTES - There's a potential for a considerable battle of brawn inside, as almost 700 pounds could come together off their benches. Former Fordham center Glenn Batemon took his 6-foot-11-inch, 335-pound frame to Miami, where he's eligible this year as a junior. He could find himself matched up Sunday against UMass freshman Jeff ''Big Deli'' Salovski, who is the same height and a bit heavier at 6 feet 11 inches, 350 pounds.
''That'd make for a great matchup,'' Lappas said.

ORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Guillermo Diaz scored a game-high 20
points and Anthony Harris keyed a decisive second-half run to lead
Miami to an 80-53 win over Massachusetts on Sunday.
It was the fourth consecutive win for Miami (5-2).
The Hurricanes went into halftime up 37-22, and opened the second half with an 18-2 run, including seven points from Harris.
Miami took a 31-point lead on a 3-pointer from Robert Hite that made it 55-24 with 13:42 remaining. Massachusetts never got closer than 22 points to Miami's lead after that.
Art Bowers scored 16 points for Massachusetts (3-3) in the loss. Anthony Anderson added 12 points and three steals for the Minutemen, who were coming off a 61-59 win over then-No. 7 Connecticut.
Miami's starting guard trio of Diaz, Harris and Hite combined for 54 points, connecting on 13-of-20 3-pointers. The Hurricanes shot 49.2 percent from the field, including 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from 3-point range, and outrebounded the Minutemen 40-26.
Miami went the first 3:02 without a basket and fell behind 8-3, but the Hurricanes mounted a 10-0 run behind five points from Diaz, who scored 18 of his 20 points in the first half.
Miami ripped off another 10-0 run to take a 26-14 lead, with Diaz accounting for the last five points. The Hurricanes took their largest lead of the half when Diaz buried his fourth 3-pointer to make it 33-17 with 2:56 remaining.

ORAL GABLES, Fla. - The UMass men's basketball squad didn't have a letdown yesterday against the University of Miami. The Minutemen experienced an utter meltdown against the Hurricanes.
In its first game since upsetting No. 7 ranked UConn on Thursday, UMass was overwhelmed by the Hurricanes at the Convocation Center, 80-53, in the teams' first-ever meeting.
``From the minute (the UConn game) ended, as happy as we were, I was concerned about Sunday,'' said Minutemen coach Steve Lappas, expressing his pregame concern about his team's maturity to handle such an emotional victory like the one against the Huskies.
UMass (3-3) couldn't have afforded even the slightest letdown against Miami's three-guard lineup yesterday, when Guillermo Diaz (20 points), Robert Hite (18) and Anthony Harris (16) combined for 54 of the Hurricanes' 80 points, sinking 13-of-20 shots from 3-point range.
``If that were just shooting drills with nobody guarding them, that would have been impressive,'' said Lappas, who admitted that he may have slightly underestimated the skills of Miami's guards. ``Those three guards are terrific.''
Sophomore guard Art Bowers led the Minutemen with 16 points, including 13 in the second half.
UMass guard Anthony Anderson, who got the Minutemen off to a good start with a 3-pointer to open the scoring, said he expected the Miami guards to be a challenge.
``I wasn't surprised,'' said Anderson, who scored 12 points. ``I was surprised that just about every shot they put up went in.''
Diaz, Hite and Harris scored 33 of their team's 37 in the first half, while hitting 8-of-14 3-point attempts. While unable to stop them, UMass sank only 3-of-13 3-point shots and was just 33 percent from the floor overall to trail at the half, 37-22.
``We didn't get back in transition fast enough and they made a couple of 3's in transition, and that got them rolling,'' Lappas said. ``After (that), it was like the snowball just kept coming.''
UMass center Rashaun Freeman, whose game-winning layup against UConn provided ``SportsCenter'' with its opening highlight Thursday, was taken out of yesterday's game by effective double-teaming in the paint. Freeman, who came in leading the Minutemen in scoring with an average of 15.6 points a game, was held scoreless for a 15-minute stretch in the first half while being limited to seven points overall.
``They did something really different today that other people hadn't done: They let him catch it,'' Lappas said. ``They were playing behind him, letting him catch it, then coming again with the guard. It was the first time for him to be doubled the way they doubled him.''
Frank Haith, Miami's first-year coach, said his team had focused on stopping Freeman.
``Freeman had an outstanding game the other night, so obviously he was someone we were focusing on,'' Haith said. ``For the most part, all our post guys did a great job, and we had help from the perimeter.''
Haith also singled out sophomore center Anthony King, who had a trio of blocks.
The game deteriorated even more in the second half. Freeman was held scoreless during the nine minutes he played, and the Hurricanes (5-2) opened with a 19-2 run, punctuated by a pair of 3's by Harris and a surging dunk by Diaz on a rebound, putting the game out of reach.
``We tried every defense that we have today. It was the first time this year we played every defense we owned,'' said Lappas, who expressed disappointment that his team was ``manhandled'' on the boards.
ORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team crash-landed to reality Sunday after Thursday's upset of Connecticut. The Minutemen followed their greatest win in the Steve Lappas era with one of the ugliest losses in the same period.
Miami (5-2) jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead and crushed UMass 80-53 at the Convocation Center Sunday. It was worst loss for the Minutemen (3-3) since they fell 90-50 to Texas Tech Nov. 21, 2003, in the Preseason NIT. Miami's lead reached 80-48 before UMass scored the final five points of the game.
''From the moment the UConn game ended I was concerned about this one,'' Lappas said. ''My big concern right after the UConn game was maturity and how we'd be able to come off a win like that and play a good team on the road. Obviously we didn't do it. We have to learn from this.''
The Hurricanes' guards lived up to their impressive reputation, combining for 54 points. Guillermo Diaz had 20 points including four first-half 3-pointers. Robert Hite made five from long range and Anthony Harris added 16 points and seven assists.
The UMass defense, which was so sharp in Thursday's 61-59 win over UConn, was noticeably absent in the first half. The Hurricanes made eight 3-pointers before intermission, most of them on open shots.
''We executed well,'' Hite said. ''We penetrated on offense. They had to help out which left guys open outside.''
Lappas admitted he may have underestimated Miami's perimeter ability.
''As good as our game plan was against UConn, this one wasn't so good,'' Lappas said. ''I underestimated them a little bit. - They shot the ball so well. Those three guards are terrific. We tried almost every defense we have today. They played great. I have to give them credit.''
Miami's outside success opened things up inside. Will Frisby had 14 points and eight rebounds as the Hurricanes outrebounded the Minutemen 40-26.
''We didn't rebound with the same intensity that we did Thursday,'' Lappas said. ''I was very disappointed the way we got manhandled on the glass - Their big guys were a little better than I thought, but we played into their hands a little bit. We have to play every rebound like there is no tomorrow.''
The Minutemen have a week off for finals and will return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday against Davidson at the Mullins Center.
Miami did a good job containing UMass junior big man Rashaun Freeman, who had just seven points and five rebounds. He continued to turn the ball over at an alarming rate with seven giveaways Sunday. He has 18 turnovers in the past three games.
Artie Bowers had a season-high 16 points, but 11 of those came in garbage time with the outcome already decided. Bowers made 6-of-14 shots including 4-of-10 from 3-point range. Lappas said he hopes it is a sign that Bowers has begun to emerge from his season-long shooting slump.
''If there is one positive to be gained, that would be it,'' Lappas said. ''He's an important guy for us.''
Anthony Anderson added 12 points, three assists and three steals.
UMass opened the first half on an 8-3 run and looked sharp as Anderson made a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the game and Freeman scored five in succession. But Miami answered with an 8-0 run and never trailed again.

ORAL GABLES, Fla. - Miami threw a different wrinkle at Rashaun Freeman defensively and frustrated the University of Massachusetts junior big man into his worst offensive effort of the season in the Hurricanes' 80-53 win Sunday. Instead of fronting Freeman and then guarding him with a second big man if he caught the ball, the Hurricanes let him catch the ball with a big man behind him and then double-teamed him with a guard when he caught it. The strategy frustrated Freeman into seven turnovers. He had just seven points and five rebounds.
''We had not done a great job this season guarding other team's post players,'' Miami coach Frank Haith said. ''He was definitely a focus of ours. I thought our guys did a great job on him.''
''That was the first time this year anybody doubled him the way they doubled him,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said. ''This was the first time this year anyone actually let him catch the ball and didn't pay for it. They just played behind them.''
Lappas said Freeman is working to correct his turnover problems.
''Ray's a big part of our progress,'' Lappas said. ''He's turning the ball over too much right now, but he's working very hard on fixing that. It's not going to be an overnight thing. He's getting better at it.''
ROAD WOES - UMass has now lost seven straight outside the Mullins Center and is 5-26 in its last 31 on the road. Lappas said his team's two road losses this year aren't a continuation of past problems.
''You're not going to win with all freshmen on the road, so forget about last year,'' Lappas said. ''These guys have experience now. We'll win on the road this year.''
CHEERS AND JEERS - Freeman was the co-Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after his 18 points, eight rebounds and game-winning shot against UConn on Thursday. However, his premature celebration earned him No. 1 on the ESPN ''Not Top 10'' list Saturday.
VIGGIANO STARTS - Junior forward Jeff Viggiano earned his first start of the season in place of sophomore Maurice Maxwell, who was sick on Saturday.
Maxwell played 19 minutes and scored four points Sunday, while Viggiano had two points in 20 minutes.
MARTIN PLAYS - After not playing in the first five games this season, Brennan Martin saw his first action with 13:08 left Sunday. He played nine minutes and didn't score.
FOUL TROUBLE - Maxwell was whistled for UMass' first technical foul of the season with 6:01 left in the first half. When he didn't earn free throws for taking a forearm in the head, Maxwell said something to the referee that quickly earned him the technical.
Freeman was called for an intentional foul with 11:20 left in the game when he hauled down Antoine Mayhand on a break-in.
NEXT UP - Davidson (4-4) will enter Sunday's game coming off two games against non-Division I opponents. The Wildcats defeated Brandeis 69-49 Saturday. They play the University of the South on Thursday.
INSTANT CLASSIC - ESPN Classic made the UMass 61-59 upset of UConn an ''instant classic'' and will rebroadcast the game at 7 p.m. Thursday.
THE 700 CLUB (ALMOST) - The final few minutes of Sunday's game featured almost 700 pounds in the paint as 350-pound UMass freshman big man Jeff ''Big Deli'' Salovski guarded Miami's 335-pound center Glenn Batemon.
MISCELLANEOUS - All three times the Minutemen beat the defending national champions they lost their next game. Kansas beat UMass after its wins over North Carolina in 1993 and Arkansas in 1994.

ORAL GABLES, Fla. - Riding the crest of its biggest win in recent memory, the wave carrying the Massachusetts men's basketball team crashed down hard on the beaches of Miami yesterday afternoon.
A day-and-a-half and 1,469 miles after defeating the UConn Huskies 61-59 in Amherst, the Minutemen received an 80-53 reality check at the hands of the Miami Hurricanes.
UMass went on a brief shooting spree at the end of the second half, but its ineptitude to cover the perimeter throughout the day put the game well out of reach. The Hurricanes' guard trio of Anthony Harris, Guillermo Diaz and Robert Hite were lights out from the floor, combining for 39 points behind the arc on 13-for-20 shooting.
Miami coach Frank Haith was pleased with his team's play, especially on the offensive end.
"I thought it was our best performance of the year from start to finish," Haith said. "I thought our ball movement and our player movement was excellent tonight from an offensive standpoint. Offensive execution was very good. You have to make the shots, and our guys shot the ball very well"
The Minutemen trailed by 15 at halftime and never came within striking distance after Miami went on an 18-2 scoring run to start the second half, led by the shooting of its guard trio.
Several baskets, however, came from offensive rebounds and a passive Minuteman frontcourt.
UMass coach Steve Lappas didn't see the rebounding energy the Minutemen had against UConn and questioned whether his team was mature enough to bring the same intensity.
"We didn't rebound the ball with the passion that we did the other day. My concern coming into this game was maturity," Lappas said. "You have to come into a situation now, off a win like that, against a good team on the road and go do it."
UMass started the game as it left off on Thursday night. Anthony Anderson broke the ice with a three, which fueled back-to-back layups from Freeman. The Minutemen led 8-3 when Miami went on a brief scoring run and caused the single lead change of the day.
Diaz scored Miami's first six points on two 3-pointers and senior forward William Frisby followed suit with a lay-up, tying the game. Diaz was the leading scorer of the game with 20 points, but Haith attributed much of the Hurricanes' success to Frisby, who was making his first start of the season.
"I thought Will had a great game tonight, in terms that we inserted him in the starting lineup, and we had to get him going," Haith said. "I thought he performed well, you know 14 [points] and eight [rebounds]. He ran the court well and we need that out of him."
UMass struggled offensively for most of the first half, shooting a miserable 33 percent from the field. Conversely, the Hurricanes were unstoppable and went eight-for-14 from behind the arc.
"You've got to give them credit. They just shot it," Lappas said. "If that was a shooting drill and nobody was guarding them that would be impressive."
Lappas mentioned that he might have slightly underestimated the guard trio, who scored 54 of Miami's points between them. UMass altered its defense several times but was unable to control the perimeter throughout the contest.
"The problem with what we did was that we didn't get back in transition fast enough, and we let them get threes in transition, and that got them rolling," Lappas said. "After that it was like a snowball that just kept coming. We tried every defense that we had today. It was the first time this year that we played with every defense that we owned."
After his 18-point performance against UConn, including the game-winning lay-up, Rashaun was shut down by a tenacious Miami defense. Freeman is the leading scorer for the Minutemen this year, but he also leads the team in turnovers with 24.
Most teams have double-teamed Freeman throughout the season, leaving the player on the opposite block open for a pass. The Hurricanes would bring one of their guards down to the paint, causing Freeman to turn the ball over seven times.
"They did a great job. They did something really different today most people haven't done. They were letting him catch it and coming to get him with a guard," Lappas said. "They had some pretty big bodies in there, so that made it hard. He's turning the ball over too much now, but he's working really hard at fixing that."
e did his homework, saw the tapes, read the stats. He knew the University of Miami's three-guard arsenal was cause for concern.
But Massachusetts coach Steve Lappas admitted he ''underestimated a lot'' just how good the Hurricanes' guards were until he saw them in person, dominating his Minutemen with 54 points in an 80-53 UM victory Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
UMass was coming off a Thursday upset of No. 7 Connecticut but had no answers for junior Rob Hite, sophomore Guillermo Diaz and sophomore Anthony Harris.
Diaz led the way with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, followed by Hite with 18 (5 of 6 three-pointers) and Harris with 16. They shot 65 percent from three-point range (13 of 20) and had 11 assists to four turnovers. During their four-game win streak, the trio has accounted for 76.9 percent of the UM offense.
''Those shooting drills would have been impressive with no one guarding them,'' Lappas said. ``Those three guards are terrific. That's as good a three as you'll see. They all can dribble, shoot and pass. They're all very athletic. We tried almost every defense we own.''
Equally impressed were the 2,392 fans, who gave the Hurricanes a rare standing ovation when coach Frank Haith pulled the starters with 2:20 to go and UM up by 28. The bench players opened the biggest lead of the game -- 80-48 -- with just over a minute remaining.
The Hurricanes improved to 5-2 and continued to show improvement under first-year coach Haith. Despite using a three-guard lineup, they dominated the boards 40-26. Forward Will Frisby, starting his first game this season, had 14 points and eight rebounds. UM also held UMass leading scorer Rashaun Freeman to seven points, fewer than half his usual output, and forced him into seven turnovers.
Lappas said the Hurricanes defended Freeman, a 6-9, 255-pound center, in a way no other team had -- behind him. They let him catch the ball and then doubled him with a guard. The strategy worked.
''This was our best performance of the year, start to finish,'' Haith said. ``Our ball movement was excellent. We had 17 assists.
``I don't want to jinx our guards, but they're playing great. My vision is for us to continue to improve. The season's long.''
Harris said the team's confidence is ``skyrocketing.''
Also skyrocketing was Diaz, the high-flying former volleyball player, who left fans high-fiving each other after one of the most spectacular dunks in recent UM history. With a minute to go in the first half, Harris missed a floater in the lane, and Diaz came out of nowhere, flew to the rim, grabbed the rebound with his right hand, cocked the ball, and slammed it full force to make it 35-20.
''I have no idea where he came from. I think he fell from the sky,'' Hite said of Diaz.
''I missed that floater and didn't even see Guillermo, but he came in from out of nowhere and showed that 42-inch vertical,'' Harris said.
Diaz smiled and shrugged off the play.
''I just saw the right side open, followed the ball, got the rebound and dunked,'' he said, matter-of-factly. ``No big deal.''
As for Diaz's shooting accuracy, Haith said it could be attributed to extra work after practice. The coaching staff is working with Diaz on getting his shot off quicker.
''He was definitely a ready shooter tonight,'' Haith said. ``These three guys [Diaz, Hite, Harris] are all good shooters with good releases, and as they keep jelling, they can only get better.''
The Hurricanes next face Stetson at 4 p.m. Saturday.
