he University of Massachusetts men's basketball team's quest to extend its current winning streak to four games could get much more difficult because senior point guard Anthony Anderson is questionable for tonight's 7:30 p.m. game against Rider in Trenton, N.J. Anderson injured his ankle late in the Minutemen's 67-63 win at Rhode Island, when a URI player fell on him. He stayed in the game and made four critical free throws but he did not practice Monday.
As for his prospects of playing tonight, UMass coach Steve Lappas said, ''We're not sure. He's a warrior. I'm sure he'll give it every shot.''
Anderson has played all 40 minutes in each of the Minutemen's last three games and is averaging 37.6 minutes per game this season. Even if Anderson plays, but his minutes are restricted, UMass would be affected because he's the team's second-leading scorer with 14.1 points to go along with 3.8 assists per game.
If Anderson can't go, junior Chris Chadwick would become the team's No. 1 point guard, while freshman guard Maurice Maxwell would back him up.
UMass sophomore forward Jeff Viggiano said keeping the team's positive momentum is critical.
''It's important to get another road win and see how much better we actually are playing,'' he said. ''This is a huge game for confidence. If we win this game its four in a row and we're going to play Dayton on (Sunday).''
Lappas said he hopes that Maxwell's confidence and level of play would remain high coming off his 12-point effort on Saturday.
''It looks like Artie (Bowers) and Rashaun have gotten some consistency. For Maurice to get some consistency would help us tremendously,' Lappas said. ''He's a good player. He's got talent. It's just a matter sometimes of when the light is going to go off as a freshman. Maybe he's ready for the light to turn off on him.''
The game will be played at Sovereign Bank Arena, not on Rider's campus in Lawrenceville, N.J. It's one of three Rider games scheduled for the building this month. The matchup is part of a two-for-one deal between the two schools. Rider came to Amherst last year and will be at the Mullins Center again next year.
This game is a rare February nonconference game for both teams.
''I'd rather not (play a nonconference game) because we'd rather be just in the conference now,'' Lappas said. ''But that's all right. We'll go out and look at it as another opportunity to try to improve.''
The Broncos are 12-7 this season and have won four of their last five games. Senior guard Jerry Johnson leads the Rider with 19.5 points and 3.9 assists per game. He's led or shared the team lead in scoring in 19 of its games.
''Johnson is a great player,'' Lappas said. ''A lot of what they do, they go as he goes.''
Unlike most mid-major schools, Rider has some size inside to match up against UMass big man Rashaun Freeman, who is on track to become the Minutemen's first rookie to lead the team in scoring since Jim McCoy did in the 1988-89 season. Junior center Steve Castleberry, who is 7 feet, 240 pounds, is averaging 12.6 points and 7.2 rebounds.

RENTON, N.J. - The best performance of Stephane Lasme's young career helped negate a slow start by the University of Massachusetts men's basketball team which won its fourth straight game 74-61 over Rider Tuesday at Sovereign Bank Arena. The four-game winning streak matches the longest for UMass under Steve Lappas, who won his first four games as the coach of the Minutemen.
Rider jumped out to a 20-9 lead to start the game, but a UMass time-out slowed the Broncos momentum as the Minutemen (9-11, 3-5 Atlantic 10) began their comeback.
Lasme scored a career-high 12 points in 16 minutes including 10 straight in a 5:30 stretch of the first half that saw UMass turn a 20-13 deficit into a 32-31 lead with two minutes, 35 seconds left before halftime.
Rashaun Freeman led the Minutemen with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jeff Viggiano added 14 points and 10 boards. Anthony Anderson scored 15 points, while Maurice Maxwell had a career-high eight assists.
''We got out to a slow start,'' said UMass forward Jeff Viggiano, ''But then our big men started to beat them up inside.''
''I just don't think we played very well,'' said Rider coach Don Harnum. ''Physically, we played hard. But it isn't easy to come back when you put the other team in the bonus with 13 minutes to go.''
The Minuteman defense completely shut down Rider leading scorer Jerry Johnson forcing him in to a 3-for-15 shooting night and just 12 points.
''Eventually, I just think we wore him out a little bit,'' UMass coach Steve Lappas said.
''We watched a couple of their games on tape,'' said UMass guard Anthony Anderson, who scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half, ''and from what we saw, their team goes as Johnson goes. We wanted to keep him in check as best we could. We knew he would score, but if we could contain him, we knew we had a good shot to win.''
Extending their winning streak to five games won't be easy as UMass next plays Dayton at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Mullins Center. The Flyers are undefeated and in first place in the Atlantic 10 West at 7-0 (17-3 overall). Dayton hosts Richmond tonight before coming to Amherst.
NOTES: Viggiano has scored in double figures in five of the last six games. ... Freeman has nine double-doubles this season. ... Anderson needs just 85 points to become the 36th 1,000-point scorer for UMass.
