From UMass Athletics, 11/16/2002

AMHERST, Mass. - Five players scored in double figures to lead the Massachusetts men's basketball team over the Coaches vs. Cancer All-Stars, 90-60, in an exhibition game at the Mullins Center Saturday night. Junior Anthony Anderson (Lynn, Mass.) led the Minutemen with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.

UMass took control of the game early, tallying a 13-1 lead just under four minutes into the first half, led by five quick points from Anderson. The Minutemen increased their lead to 23 points in the first half, going up 41-18 with 4:22 left in the first period. The Coaches vs. Cancer All-Stars were able to trim the UMass lead to 14 points at the intermission when former Minuteman Shannon Crooks connected on a field goal and three-pointer during a scoring run late in the first half.

The Coaches Vs. Cancer All-Stars cut the Massachusetts advantage to 13 points with 13:39 left in the second half, but a spurt of offense from Massachusetts freshman Michael Lasme (Abidjan, Ivory Coast) allowed the Minutemen to regain control of the game. Lasme tallied nine-straight points for UMass, increasing the lead to 63-41. Juniors Marcus Cox (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Raheim Lamb (Boston, Mass.) added field goals down the stretch, giving UMass the 90-60 victory.

Crooks led the Coaches vs. Cancer All-Stars with 14 points, while his teammate Demetrius Cherry added 11 points and Billy Celuck tallied 10.

Anderson's 17 points led the Minutemen in scoring on the night. Lasme tallied 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Cox (12 points), Jackie Rogers (Syracuse, N.Y.), 11 points, and Lamb (10 points) all scored in double figures. Freshman Jeff Viggiano (Suffield, Conn.) tallied five steals on the night, which tied the UMass exhibition single-game record set by Cary Herer on Dec. 11, 1989 vs. Marathon Oil.

Massachusetts will next play at the Maui Invitational Nov. 25-27. The Minutemen will face No. 21 Indiana in their first game on Nov. 25 at 5:00 p.m. in a game that will be televised on ESPN2.
